AdamDickinson.com
I bought the
AdamDickinson.com domain name in 2003 for two reasons: I was
applying to participate in a Junior Team Canada Trade
Mission and thought having a domain would make me seem more
professional, and I wanted an online place to display photographs
and support my on-again off-again photography ventures.
I
made it onto Junior Team Canada and had a great adventure
representing local businesses and institutions in Mexico. However,
five years later I have put aside my “career” of selling photo
magnets and CDs to tourists and decided not to photograph any more
weddings after my only gig capturing a wedding for a friend.
What am I doing now? I received my Bachelor of
Business Administration from UNB Saint John in 2006. I graduated
with a major in economics and was awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s
Silver medal for having the highest marks in the faculty.
Currently I’m working for a local real estate appraisal and
consulting company (click
to see my profile on our home page).
I have recently been awarded a Post-Graduate Certificate in
Real Property Valuation (University of British Columbia) and was awarded the
AACI
(Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute) designation in June 2009.
Where am I now? I live in the South End of Saint
John, NB. I have volunteered with several groups in an effort to
make my community and city better for residents.
From 2006
to 2007 I helped launch the Habitat for Humanity ReStore
that sells used and surplus building
materials to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity Saint John’s
house-construction efforts. Since then, I have taken part in several
“teardowns” for Habitat where volunteers remove saleable building
materials from homes that owners plan to teardown (with the
permission of the owners, of course).
Since 2007 I have been
on the steering committee for a housing development known as Abbey
St. Andrew. The development is part of the Church of St. Andrew St.
David’s efforts to improve the south end by providing affordable
housing and other services. The development will have over 90
apartments and underground parking. The building will mix affordable
housing units for singles and families who have low incomes, with
units rented on the open market. The project will have
heritage-style architecture and will be a great improvement to the
parking lot that exists on site at the corner of Charlotte Street and Duke
Street. In the Fall of 2008, we
incorporated as Abbey St. Andrew Inc., and I was elected as a member
of the board.
I have participated in a few other activities
lately including an ACAP sponsored cleanup of local wetlands; several meetings of the
Fusion Saint John Urban
Planning and Economic Development Committee; and I was on the
Council of the local Junior Achievement chapter from 2006 to 2008.
What is
the purpose of this website? Hopefully I
will be able to use this website to highlight some of my volunteer
activities, and ideally encourage others to join in and make their
communities great places to live.
As
promised, I am also using this site (check the outdoor adventure
section) to showcase some of my adventures including my trip with my bicycle
brother and friend to Grand Manan (p.s. this is a pretty epic trek
for someone who normally doesn't bike with a back pack and
tent).
